The Basilica of the Agony - 50 fils
The Basilica of the Agony, widely known as the Church of All Nations, is a prominent Roman Catholic sanctuary situated at the foot of the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem, adjacent to the historic Garden of Gethsemane. According to Christian tradition, the site encloses the bedrock upon which Jesus Christ prayed and underwent his agony in the garden on the night before his crucifixion. Religious veneration at this location dates back to the 4th century with the construction of a Byzantine basilica, later succeeded by a 12th-century Crusader church, marking it as one of the most sacred pilgrimage destinations in Christendom. The modern basilica was constructed between 1919 and 1924 under the direction of Italian architect Antonio Barluzzi, built over the foundations of its Byzantine and Crusader predecessors. Funded by contributions from twelve different nations—earning it the name the Church of All Nations—the structure is recognized for its classical neo-Byzantine facade featuring a triple-arched portico and an intricate, gold-accented mosaic pediment depicting Christ offering his sufferings to God the Father. Surrounded by centuries-old olive trees, the sanctuary remains a focal point of Christian devotion and architectural significance in the Holy Land.
